Best artificial Christmas trees in the UK for 2026: how to choose, and our picks by budget

The best artificial Christmas tree for most UK living rooms in 2026 is a hinged 6ft or 7ft tree with at least 1,000 branch tips, a mix of moulded PE and cut PVC needles, and a girth no wider than the floor space allows, which puts the sweet spot between £130 and £240. Cheaper trees save money by cutting tip count and using PVC only; dearer trees add more PE, more tips and built-in LEDs. This guide explains the five things that decide how good a tree looks, then names our picks for each budget and room from the 65 trees we stock at Sapcote Garden Centre, with prices.

What makes one artificial Christmas tree better than another?

Five things, in this order of importance:

  1. Branch tip count. The number of individual branch ends. More tips means a fuller tree with fewer gaps; a 7ft tree needs 1,000 tips to look full and 2,000 or more to look like a real fir. Budget trees of 500 tips rely on heavy decorating.
  2. Needle material. PVC needles are flat strips of cut film: cheap, full and slightly shiny. PE needles are moulded from casts of real branches: three-dimensional, matt and realistic, but dearer. The best trees use PE on the outer tips and PVC inside for fullness (see our guide to PE versus PVC trees).
  3. Construction. Hinged branches fold down from the trunk sections and the tree goes up in minutes; hook-in branches have to be sorted and slotted every year. Most full-size trees sold by garden centres today are hinged; it is the cheapest online trees that still use hook-in branches, so check the box.
  4. Shape and girth. A full tree is as wide as 1.3 to 1.5m at the base at 7ft; a slim tree is 0.7 to 0.9m and a pencil tree about 0.5m. Measure the floor space before the height (our tree size guide covers this).
  5. Lights. Pre-lit trees carry 150 to 800 warm white LEDs on a 6ft to 7.5ft tree, or several thousand on a light-show tree; the question is whether you want to save the hour of wrapping (our pre-lit or unlit guide).

How much should you spend on an artificial Christmas tree?

Under £80 buys a 6ft PVC tree with 500 to 700 tips that will do a good job decorated heavily. £100 to £170 buys the trees most people are happy with for ten years: 1,000 to 2,000 tips, a realistic shape, sometimes PE tips. £200 to £350 buys the premium realistic trees with 2,000 to 4,000 tips or built-in LEDs. Above £400 you are paying for a lot of LEDs or a very large tree. A tree lasts ten to fifteen Christmases, so a £170 tree is about £15 a year, less than one real tree.

Our picks for 2026, by budget and room

Best value 6ft and 7ft tree: Everlands Imperial Pine

The Imperial Pine 1.8m (6ft) at £75 has 525 tips and a 1.17m girth; the 2.1m (7ft) at £99 has 770 tips. Classic pine shape, hinged, easy to shape, and the tree we sell most of. The snowy version is £89 and £119.

Best realistic tree under £200: National Tree Company Dunhill Fir

The Dunhill Fir 1.8m is £129 with 1,430 tips and the 2.1m is £169 with 2,144 tips and a 1.30m girth: dense, dark green, with the layered look of a real fir. The Everlands Greenland Fir 2.1m at £169 is the alternative, with PE needles.

Most realistic tree we stock: National Tree Company Lawrence Fir

3,028 tips on the 2m (£239) and 4,228 on the 2.28m (£319), the highest tip counts in the range, with a 1.22m to 1.47m girth. Pre-lit versions carry 650 and 800 warm white LEDs at £339 and £429. The Newbury Spruce (1,777 tips at 2m, £189) and Cranford Spruce (2,033 tips, £199) are the spruce-shaped alternatives.

Best slim tree: National Tree Company Kingswood Fir

719 tips at 2m on a 0.71m girth for £79, which is a lot of tree for a narrow space; the 2.28m is 1,075 tips at £99 (snowy), and the pre-lit 2m with 350 warm white LEDs is £129. The Carrington Fir (2m, £139, 1,886 tips, 0.86m girth) is the slim tree with PE needles. Premier’s Slim New Jersey (1.8m £79, 2.1m £109) and Pencil Pine (2m, 0.56m girth, £45) are narrower still.

Best pre-lit tree: National Tree Company Pre-Lit Newbury Spruce and Pre-Lit Kingswood Fir

The Pre-Lit Newbury Spruce 2m (£279, 650 LEDs, 1,777 tips) and 2.28m (£339, 750 LEDs) are the pre-lit trees that look fullest; the Pre-Lit Kingswood Fir 2m at £129 with 350 LEDs is the value choice. Premier’s Pre-Lit Arbour 1.8m (£85, 150 dual-colour LEDs) is the cheapest pre-lit tree we stock, and the Pre-Lit Starry Spruce 2.1m (£419) is the light-show tree with 3,950 LEDs.

Best snowy tree: National Tree Company Pre-Lit Snowy Dorchester

2,074 snow-tipped tips and 500 warm white LEDs at 2m for £299 (2.28m £369). For an unlit snowy tree the Everlands Snowy Imperial Pine 1.8m at £89 and the Premier Flocked Kenilworth 2.1m at £179 are the two we point people to; the Premier Frosted Bristle 2.1m (£169) is frosted rather than flocked.

Best small tree: Everlands Imperial Pine 1.2m and Premier fibre optics

The Imperial Pine 1.2m (4ft) is £35 and the 1.5m (5ft) £49; the Flocked Woodcote Spruce 1.5m is £55. For a table or a child’s room the Premier fibre optic trees run from 80cm at £49 to 1.8m at £149 and need no decorating.

Best large tree: Everlands Imperial Pine 2.4m and Premier Ridgemere 2.4m

For a hall or a high ceiling the Imperial Pine 2.4m (8ft, 980 tips) is £129 and the Ridgemere 2.4m is £259; the National Tree Company 2.28m (7.5ft) trees above are the realistic choices at that height.

How do these compare with trees from Amazon, B&Q or Balsam Hill?

Marketplace trees under £60 are almost always PVC-only with 400 to 600 tips and hook-in branches, which is why they look thin in the photos people post in January. The big DIY chains sell decent PVC trees at the Everlands price point. At the top, Balsam Hill and similar online brands sell heavily PE trees with 3,000 to 5,000 tips at £500 and up, delivered in a box; the Lawrence Fir and Newbury Spruce give most of that realism at half the price. The thing a garden centre adds is that the trees are up and lit: you can stand the Dunhill next to the Imperial Pine and see what £54 buys.
