What does a starter Lemax village cost?
Budget one: a single scene, about £60. One lighted building (£25 to £35), three figurines on 3-for-2 (about £16 for three, paying for two), a set of bristle trees (£1.99 to £10) and a 4.5V adaptor. Enough for a mantelpiece or windowsill, and the building will fit any village you build later.
Budget two: a first village, £120 to £200. Three lighted buildings (£75 to £105 at our reduced prices), six to nine figurines on 3-for-2 (£30 to £45), a road or cobble mat (£4.99 to £18.99), a tree set and an adaptor. This is the village most people start with, on a sideboard or a 4ft table. At full RRP the same pieces would be nearer £170 to £260.
Budget three: a display with movement, £400 to £800. Five or six buildings, one or two Sights & Sounds scenes (£99 each is typical, the Carnival rides £130 to £160), a facade for the back (£49.99 to £79.99), twenty figurines and accessories, a lit tree, Plaza System base plates, a pond and two or three adaptors. Built over two or three years, this is the size of village that fills a 6ft table.
What should you buy first?
A lighted building before anything else, because it is the piece that makes the display look like a village and it holds its value if you change direction later. Then figures and trees on 3-for-2, which are cheap and transform a single building into a scene. Leave the animated Sights & Sounds pieces until the layout is settled, because they need space, a socket and a tier of their own. Buy the adaptor with the first lit piece; most adaptor-powered buildings are sold without one. Our guide to the Lemax collections helps you pick a theme to build around.
Is Lemax good value, and is it worth it?
Lemax is the mid-priced Christmas village brand: cheaper than Department 56, dearer than supermarket villages, and the one with the widest UK stockist network and the longest-running collections, which matters when you want to add to a village in five years’ time. The pieces are porcelain or resin with proper wiring and a UK adaptor, and well-kept buildings are resold between collectors. The caution is that it is habit-forming: a village is never finished, which is why most collectors budget for a building or two each year rather than buying everything at once.
