The three Christmas village brands sold in the UK compared on origin, collections, price, power, animation and availability, whether they mix, and which to choose.

Best garden centres for Christmas in the Midlands (2026): displays, Lemax, real trees and grottos compared
The best garden centres for Christmas in the Midlands are the ones that build a real display rather than fill an aisle: lit trees you can compare, a Lemax village running, real trees under cover, somewhere to eat, and parking that does not ruin the trip. Measured that way, the shortlist for 2026 is Sapcote Garden Centre near Leicester for the M69 corridor, Gates at Oakham, Trowell near Nottingham, Whilton Locks near Daventry and Webbs at Wychbold, with Bosworths, Blue Diamond East Bridgford, Codsall and Wergs, Planters and Notcutts Solihull worth knowing about for what each does well. Everything below was checked against each centre’s own website on 14 October 2026; drive times are approximate, from junction 2 of the M69.
What makes a garden centre good for Christmas?
Garden centres sell the same brands (Premier lights, Lemax, Everlands and National Tree Company trees appear everywhere), so the differences are in what they do with them:
- The display. Are the artificial trees up and lit, are the lights running, are the decorations shown as themed rooms or on pegs? A centre that builds its display in September and runs it to Christmas Eve is where you can compare a 6ft and a 7ft tree side by side.
- Lemax. Only authorised stockists carry it, and the size of the running village display is the quickest measure of how seriously a centre takes Christmas. Our UK Lemax stockist list covers every region.
- Real trees. Nordmann fir from late November, ideally stored under cover and unnetted so you can inspect the shape.
- Santa, grottos and events. Some centres are now Christmas attractions with ticketed grottos, light trails and ice rinks; others keep to retail. Neither is better, but it decides where a family goes.
- The practical things. A cafe, free parking near the door, Sunday opening, and how far it is from the motorway with a tree on the roof.

Leicestershire and the M69
Sapcote Garden Centre, Sapcote
The Lemax Wonderland is the largest Lemax display in Leicestershire, with all eight collections running and 398 lines stocked, 232 of them priced below Lemax’s recommended price; 65 artificial trees from Premier, National Tree Company and Everlands, most of them lit on display; 240 Premier light sets; decorations by colour theme; one of the biggest gonk selections in the county; and real Nordmann firs from late November, kept under cover, unnetted to inspect and netted for the car, with delivery to Leicester postcodes. It is two minutes from junction 2 of the M69 and fifteen from junction 21 of the M1, with 100 free parking spaces by the door, a café with gluten-free options, dogs on leads welcome, and open seven days from September to Christmas Eve. Not ideal for families who want a ticketed grotto or a light trail: Sapcote is a Christmas shop, not an attraction, which is the trade-off for the display and the prices. See the visitor guide and the Lemax Wonderland guide.
Gates Garden Centre, Cold Overton, Oakham
The most decorated Christmas display in the county by awards: second place for destination garden centres in the Garden Centre Association’s 2025 Christmas display competition, and the GCA Midlands winner for three years running before that. Its site lists more than 5,500 Christmas products, Lemax in store and online, real and artificial trees, two restaurants and a farm shop, and Dine with Santa from 28 November. Cold Overton is on the Rutland border, an hour from the M69, so it is the pick for Melton, Oakham, Stamford and east Leicestershire.
Nottinghamshire
Trowell Garden Centre, Trowell
Trowell opened its 2026 Christmas shop on 2 October and calls it its biggest yet, built as six themed rooms, running to 31 December. It is a serious Lemax stockist, in store and online with a dedicated page for the 2026 releases, and has two cafes. Artificial trees only, and no events stated. Forty-five minutes from the M69 and the obvious choice for Nottingham, Derby and Ilkeston.
Blue Diamond East Bridgford
Blue Diamond’s rebuilt centre on the Fosse Way, more than 81,000 square feet under cover, with a Christmas preview evening on 15 October, a grotto from 21 November, breakfast with Santa from 19 December, two cafes and a farm shop. Lemax is sold on the Blue Diamond website; whether East Bridgford carries it in store is not stated. Fifty-five minutes from the M69.
Northamptonshire
Whilton Locks Garden Village, Daventry
The Christmas attraction of the four counties: a Winter Wonderland with a Santa’s grotto (£22.99), breakfast and tea with Santa, a SEND grotto, Santa Paws and an ice rink from £6.95, beside the Grand Union Canal with a canalside restaurant. It sells real trees, wreaths and stands; Lemax is not stated on its site. Forty minutes from the M69, and the pick if the children’s day out matters more than the decorations.
Bosworths, Burton Latimer
A Kettering family centre with a grotto, a quiet Santa session, Santa Paws and a new VR sleigh ride for 2026, real trees and the Aspen Cafe. The website currently shows Lemax’s Spooky Town range rather than the Christmas villages. An hour from the M69.
Worcestershire, the West Midlands and Staffordshire
Webbs, Wychbold
Webbs turns its Wychbold centre near Droitwich into a winter wonderland with one of the larger Lemax departments in the region, real trees in store, a winter food market from 13 November and the Enchanted Gardens light trail from 20 November to 2 January. There is no grotto at Wychbold; Santa does breakfasts on the weekends from 28 November. Open until 7pm Monday to Saturday, which is unusual. About 65 minutes from the M69, so a destination day for south Birmingham, Worcester and Bromsgrove.
Codsall and Wergs, Wolverhampton
Winter wonderland display, UK-grown Nordmann fir and Norway spruce, lit model villages, a grotto on the December weekends, a VR sleigh ride and festive afternoon teas. An hour from the M69, for Wolverhampton, Telford and the Black Country.
Planters, Tamworth and Bretby
Two centres, both GCA highly commended, with real, potted and artificial trees from mid November and real reindeer at Tamworth from late November to 23 December. Lemax not stated. Tamworth is 30 minutes from the M69 and Bretby about 50, for Lichfield, Sutton Coldfield and Burton.
Notcutts, Solihull
A chain Christmas department on the Stratford Road with a cafe and festive afternoon teas; the website lists the online Christmas range but makes no display, Lemax or event claims specific to Solihull. Forty minutes from the M69.
